Labour Rights: Current Grantees
Export processing and special economic zones have been established in many countries of the Global South and East leading to enormous migratory movements and bringing some kind of financial independence to millions of people, particularly women, for the first time. These gains, however, have often come at the expense of internationally recognised labour rights and institutional protections. In certain places men and women work in dismal conditions, where attempts to claim their rights are met with threats or actual violence. We support groups working to improve working conditions in global supply chains, mainly in the garment sector in Asia and Central America. The sub-programme has a particular focus on groups advocating for the rights of working women.
