Cape Town Opera

Cape Town Opera is the only fulltime opera company in South Africa. It aims to provide a full and varied programme of world-class opera, and to support and encourage singers and performing arts practitioners from South Africa and abroad to create works that reflect South Africa’s cultural diversity and explore African identity. It employs a permanent company of young singers, opera practitioners, instructors, and administrators, as well as additional contracts to choreographers, musicians, directors, conductors, designers, and technicians. Cape Town Opera engages with local communities to create jobs in the arts, investing in the future of South African culture. The Trust’s grant supports Cape Town Opera’s youth outreach and early career development work. This work offers farm, church, and community-based choral groups access to top tier musical coaching and enables 2,500 underprivileged young people each year to access high quality musical education, including teenagers from townships and rural communities. A small number of the singers can attain their graduate qualifications from accredited universities, and after a successful audition will then join South Africa’s only full-time opera ensemble, the Cape Town Opera Chorus. Many young singers selected for the Opera’s Young Artist Programme are now resident and performing with opera companies across the world.
