Centre for Environmental Rights (CER)

The Centre for Environmental Rights was established in 2010 to realise environmental justice and the right to a healthy and protected environment for all people living in South Africa. While the Centre is principally an organisation composed of activist lawyers, it employs a range of strategies including community organising, shareholder activism, research, advocacy and litigation. The Centre’s approach puts people first, understanding that “fence line communities” (those communities living immediately adjacent to industrial pollution) are best positioned to speak to the implications of the environmental issues and solutions that impact them directly.
