Foundation for Human Rights

The Foundation for Human Rights was established in 1996 to address the legacies of apartheid, support South Africa’s transition to democracy, and build a culture of human rights. Based in Johannesburg, the organisation focuses on access to justice, socio-economic rights, environmental rights, human rights violations against vulnerable groups, and accountability for grave crimes. The Foundation engages in grant-making, capacity-building, strategic litigation, policy and advocacy, research and civil society mobilisation. The Trust supports the Foundation’s programme to address the ‘“unfinished business” of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. This programme seeks to ensure victims’ rights to truth, justice and reparations for apartheid-era human rights violations that remain unresolved.
