Human Rights Foundation of Turkey

Founded in 1990, the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey works to document and denounce torture and provide rehabilitation for survivors. To date it has provided medical and psychological treatment to over 17,000 people, including those subjected to serious human rights violations, mainly torture due to the Kurdish conflict and violations at the hands of the police. The Foundation currently has four rehabilitation centres and two referral centres around the country, and is best known for its pioneering role in devising the Manual on the Effective Investigation and Documentation of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (the ‘Istanbul Protocol’).
