Imperial War Museum

The Imperial War Museum was founded in 1917 to ensure that future generations understood the causes, course and consequences of the First World War. Its remit was later extended to cover subsequent conflicts. The Trust grant supports Phase 2 of the Transformation of the Museum which follows the 2014 completion of the First World War Galleries. In particular, it supports the inauguration of new Holocaust Galleries, planned for opening in 2021. The current Holocaust exhibition was opened in 2000 and receives on average 650,000 visitors a year. The new Galleries will highlight and maximise individual personal stories and direct survivor testimonies to show how this vast event affected the lives of ordinary people across Europe. Taking into account the significant body of research on the Holocaust, eyewitness accounts and evidence, it will place new and vital insights into the Holocaust at the heart of the new Galleries, ensuring that this subject is more clearly understood than ever before.
