The KuzeyDoğa Society (KuzeyDoğa) was established in Kars in Northeastern Turkey in 2008. It was set up to protect and restore this remote and ecologically important part of the country, which had previously been largely ignored by conservation. The ultimate aim of the organisation is to prevent species loss and the collapse of critical ecosystem processes. The organisation achieves this through long-term monitoring of bird and keystone mammal populations and their habitats, alongside working with communities to implement practical conservation solutions that also benefit local people. The organisation currently focuses on two conservation priorities: the protection and restoration of 11 wetland sites and Important Bird Areas (IBAs), and supporting the establishment of Turkey’s first wildlife corridor.
