Citizen Lab

The Citizen Lab is an interdisciplinary research unit based at the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto. The Lab conducts mixed method research at the intersection of information and communication technologies, human rights, and global security. A significant focus of its work is on censorship in digital environments, including documenting state-level internet censorship around particular events such as elections and periods of civil unrest; studying censorship and surveillance in popular applications such as social media, instant messaging, and search engines; scanning for installation of Internet filtering devices used to conduct censorship and surveillance; and research on the proliferation of targeted surveillance software.
