How we work

As a private funder, we have the freedom to act swiftly and to take risks in what and who we support. We know results aren’t guaranteed, but we invest in groups with ambitious leadership whose members have a clear and practical vision for what they want to achieve.

What does this look like in practice? We identify new groups through recommendations and fieldwork. Our programme officers evaluate them and submit recommendations to the Trustee grant committee for final decisions. We also run a number of strategic initiatives funding groups working to address shared goals.

Most of our grants are unrestricted. We trust groups to use our funding effectively, and in response to the emerging needs of their particular context. We believe that we can best encourage innovation and imagination by allowing people to develop and pursue their own ideas.

But we don’t compromise on our values. SRT’s belief system is underpinned by the principles of human rights and the rule of law. We are politically non-partisan, and expect the same of our partners.

As a registered charity we can only support activities that can be considered as charitable according to the law of England and Wales (Charities Act 2006). For more information, please consult the website of the Charity Commission.
