APPG on Extraordinary Rendition
The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Extraordinary Rendition was established in 2005 to investigate alleged UK involvement in the US rendition programme. “Extraordinary Rendition,” or the transfer of detainees to secret prisons on foreign shores, was used widely during the “War on Terror” (2001-2009). It allowed governments to evade normal legal processes enabling the indefinite incarceration of suspected terrorists, and their interrogation using torture and other forms of cruel and degrading treatment. The APPG has two main aims: to expose the extent of UK involvement in the US rendition programme, and to prevent the UK from participating in any such practices in future. It will use its findings to challenge ongoing redactions, and to push for policy change. The APPG also proposes to reform and strengthen the Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC), which serves as the main overseeing body to British intelligence and security services.
