Emergency Response Rooms

Emergency Response Rooms (ERRs) are a decentralized, community-led mutual aid network operating across Sudan, building on the Neighbourhood Resistance Committees which formed during the 2019 revolution. They expanded organically to form ERRs following the outbreak of war in 2023. Now, ERRs are composed of over 26,000 volunteers working at the neighbourhood level, providing life-saving assistance through localised coordination. Responses to the critical situation range from urgent life-saving interventions such as healthcare provision, evacuations and communal kitchens to longer-view rehabilitation measures such as psychosocial support for women and children. ERRs have been nominated twice for the Nobel Peace Prize. They are recognised not only for their response to emergent humanitarian crises, but also their provision of spaces for communities to collaborate and practice democracy, preparing for the repair of civil society after the war.
