Lawyers for Human Rights
Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) was established in 1979 following a conference on human rights protection hosted by the Centre for Applied Legal Studies.
Established in 1979, Lawyers for Human Rights aims to promote and protect human rights and to strengthen democracy in South Africa. With a view to supporting vulnerable, marginalised and indigent people and communities, the organisation provides pro bono legal advice, conducts strategic litigation, and undertakes research, advocacy and trainings. Specifically, it focuses on six programme areas: statelessness, refugee and migrant rights; penal reform; land and housing; environmental rights; gender equality; and strategic litigation.
