AMERA was set up in 2003 to promote the development of pro bono legal aid for refugees in countries where such services do not exist. Its mission has since expanded to include the provision of psycho-social counselling for traumatised and tortured refugees, facilitation in family reunification, and other matters relating to upholding the fundamental rights of refugees and forced migrants in Africa and the Middle East.
