Praesa

The Project for the Study of Alternative Education in South Africa (PRAESA) is a multilingual, early literacy research and development organisation, affiliated with the University of Cape Town. Founded in 1992 they have established themselves as a leading organisation promoting multilingualism in early years teaching. Most recently, they developed a successful country-wide campaign – Nal’ibali. Nal’ibali has now spun off into an independent organisation and PRAESA are developing specific new projects and models. The Trust’s funding will sustain the organisation through this period of change, and to develop their new initiative, Storyplay. Storyplay aims to give teachers access to holistic evidence-based strategies, tools and materials to stimulate children’s early literacy learning through storytelling, writing and imaginative play in mother-tongue languages.
