Samir Kassir Foundation

The Samir Kassir Foundation was founded in 2006 by friends and family of prominent Lebanese journalist and writer -Samir Kassir – to commemorate his legacy through protecting and promoting freedom of expression, including artistic and creative expression and freedom of information, in the Levant region. Samir Kassir was assassinated by a car bomb in 2005, possibly due to his outspoken criticism of the then Syrian military and political presence in Lebanon. The Foundation monitors, documents and campaigns against violations of freedom expression and advocates for legal reforms to safeguard it. It also provides holistic support and capacity development to journalists, media workers, artists, intellectuals and social media activists particularly those in distress and/or working in hostile environments.
