Engine room

Founded in 2010, the Engine Room is an international, multi-disciplinary team with staff based on five continents. It advances civil society’s strategic, effective and responsible use of data and technology through research, direct support and community building. It provides pro-bono and for-fee support to activists and organisations to strategically incorporate technology and data into their work in a way that increases their impact and fits within existing workflows. It produces interdisciplinary research to help donors, human rights and humanitarian organisations to understand how data and “innovative” digital technology can support and/or impede their work. It also connects and mobilises actors from various communities and spaces to shape the narrative around what a rights-based approach to data and digital technology should look like.
