International PEN is the world writers association, a membership organisation with 145 centres in 104 countries.

International PEN is the world writers’ association, a membership organisation with 145 centres in 104 countries. It promotes literature, defends freedom of expression and develops a community of writers and readers worldwide. International PEN has a number of thematic committees including the Writers for Peace Committee, Translation and Linguistic Rights Committee and Women Writers’ Committee. The work of the International PEN Writers in Prison Committee is well established as one of the leading voices in defending human rights for writers. With more than 1000 active cases of writers under threat on the current case list, the International PEN Writers in Prison Committee leads campaigns on key cases with international resonance. International PEN provides research and information on issues and cases to the PEN centres and leads and mobilises the support of the PEN centres worldwide.
