OFF-Biennale

OFF-Biennale started as a grassroots project in 2014 with a group of artists determined to resist the state takeover of the arts and culture sector in Hungary. OFF-Biennale now presents a festival in and around Budapest of independent artists using a mix of public and private space, often in unusual locations, to stimulate debate about social, environmental and political conditions. Their ambition to create an internationally acclaimed event without the endorsement of the state also plays out as a desire to strengthen the art scene’s involvement in civil society, in convening spaces to connect with a wide audience.
