Ukuthula Trust

The Ukuthula Trust, founded in 1998 and registered under its current name in 2013, was formed to follow up on the recommendations of Breaking the Silence, Building True Peace, the first transitional justice report on the Gukurahundi massacres in Matabeleland, western Zimbabwe, in the 1980s. Headquartered in Bulawayo, the organisation promotes greater accountability and good governance in western Zimbabwe and operates two peace centres in rural Matabeleland. With the only independent team of forensic experts and counsellors in Southern Africa, the organisation focuses on supporting local truth-seeking efforts, including exhuming and identifying victims of the Gukurahundi massacres and documenting the violence. Ukuthula also facilitates conflict resolution and mediation at the community level and supports skills training for women, youth, and civic education programmes.
